Dalgona Coffee Trending
Before I share the easy, step-by-step recipe with you, let me give you a little background on how Dalgona Coffee became an international Internet star. This cold, whipped, coffee drink was made famous by a popular South Korean actor, Jung Il-woo. In January 2020, he appeared on a tv show, Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant, and ordered a cold, whipped, coffee drink. The beverage reminded him of an old-fashioned, Korean street food snack made of caramelized sugar and baking soda called Dalgona. It was at that moment that Dalgona Coffee was born. Next, cue the millions of people stuck at home because of the coronavirus finding out about this newfangled beaten coffee. Dalgona Coffee becomes an overnight, viral sensation as millions around the world post pics of their concoctions!
Homemade Dalgona Coffee Recipe
Now, let’s get started. You’ll need the following ingredients to make one serving:
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons instant coffee powder or granules
- Milk, to serve
- Ice, to serve
- Add the hot water, sugar, and instant coffee to a bowl.
- Either hand whisk or use an electric mixer (or immersion blender) until the mixture is fluffy and light. Within about 5-6 minutes of constant whisking, the color will change from dark brown to a light brown, honey color. Once it turns to a light brown, meringue-like texture, then you know you’re done with this step.
- To assemble the drink, use a spoon to dollop the whipped mixture over a cup of milk and ice.
If you’d like an ombre look to your Dalgona, stir just a little. If you’d rather enjoy a more prevalent coffee flavor throughout, then stir it until completely blended.

I enjoyed this strong, whipped, coffee drink. Generally, it’s a bit sweet for my liking but makes a great presentation. If you want to try something different and easy to do, I recommend this! Five ingredients and five minutes, that’s all you need! Moreover, I think it’s very similar to a Greek-style frappé and Beaten Coffee from India. And, did you know that the snack, Dalgona, is a relative of honeycomb toffee, sponge candy, sponge toffee, cinder toffee, seafoam, golden crunchers, and hokey pokey candy?
Variations on a Theme
You could also serve this whipped coffee over gently steamed milk instead of chilled milk. Try dairy-free almond or cashew milk to add a nutty dimension to the flavor. Garnish with cinnamon, cocoa powder, or a touch of pumpkin spice to add more depth to this milky, bittersweet whipped coffee. (For my fantastic DIY recipe for pumpkin spice, click here!)
